Courageous conversations strengthen relationships rather than strain them.

Why are courageous conversations so hard?

Courageous conversations force us to confront what we instinctively try to avoid: fear, uncertainty and emotional discomfort.

In the workplace, it often feels safer to stay silent, delay feedback or hope an issue resolves itself. But beneath that hesitation is a powerful, unconscious response that holds many of us back.

Fear looms large. We worry about damaging relationships, triggering conflict or saying the wrong thing. As a result, we procrastinate or withdraw, telling ourselves it’s not the right time.

Yet these moments, uncomfortable as they are, offer powerful opportunities to build self-awareness, deepen our understanding of others and gain mastery over our emotions and behaviour.

A lack of experience and skill also plays a significant role. Many people have never been taught how to navigate emotionally charged conversations well.
